Arranging for the Baptism of your Child

When are baptisms celebrated?
Baptisms are celebrated on the first and third Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. Since Baptism is a communal event, we do not, as a general rule, celebrate "private christenings." Baptism strengthens the Christian community with the addition of each new member. Furthermore, it gives all of us an opportunity to pray for each other -- even the "stranger"who does not belong to our family. Actually, baptism celebrates the fact that all of us are part of one large family -- the family of God as members of the Body of Christ.  In that sense, water is thicker than blood when the water is the water of baptism!

Do the parents or godparents have to attend a class?
In Holy Spirit parish, godparents are not required to attend a preparation session. First time parents, however, are asked to attend a one-evening preparation program. At this program, parents will have the opportunity to submit the information we need for the baptismal records (the baptism register). Parents who have already attended preparation programs for a previous child need not attend another program. In such a case, the information can be submitted to us by calling the rectory (516-354-0359) .

Who may act as a godparent?
A godparent is more than just a "friend of the family" or a special member of the family upon whom you will confer the "honor" of being your child's godparent. They are people whom you choose with care because they, by their life and example, are models of Christian faith and love. Therefore, a godparent is practicing Roman Catholic who has been confirmed and is at least sixteen years of age. In certain family circumstances, you may have a non-Catholic Christian act as a Christian Witness. You may not have two godparents of the same sex, nor may you have a non-Christian (e.g., a Jewish or Moslem) act as a godparent or witness. If circumstances are such, only one godparent is necessary for baptism. Please be aware that once the baptism ceremony has taken place, it is impossible to change your child's godparents (therefore, choose carefully!!).
