Parish Organizations & Societies |
Altar Servers |
This group of boys and girls, from grades 4 through high school, assist the Parish Community in its liturgical prayer. In addition to the special opportunity afforded to the server to participate in the liturgy, other goals of the altar server program are: deepening the servers faith, helping the server to appreciate the Mass and inspiring him/her to consider a religious vocation. There are two full group meetings each year as well as a summer outing to Great Adventure Theme Park. |
Baptism Program |
First time parents seeking to have their child baptized are asked to attend a class given on the first Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center. The program offers parents a spirituality of parenthood relating this spirituality to the celebration of this wonderful sacrament of initiation. Click here for more information regarding the baptism of your child. |
Catholic Ministries Appeal |
This appeal is a major source of support for diocesan activities such as Catholic Charities, the Seminary, education of the young, training for lay ministries, the diaconate program and the like. A portion of each dollar contributed is returned to Holy Spirit parish for the support of our programs. The Appeal is conducted each Winter/Spring. |
Ministry of Consolation |
The Ministry of Consolation consists of members of our parish family who want to extend the compassion of our Lord to the newly bereaved. Members of the Ministry of Consolation help by assisting the family in the planning of the funeral liturgy (the choosing of appropriate scripture readings or hymns), by bringing the family a cake as a token of our sympathy and support, by preparing a personalized booklet for the celebration of the funeral liturgy and by attending the liturgy and offer hospitality and assistance to all who are present at the funeral Mass. |

Early Childhood Liturgy of the Word |
At the 9:30 liturgy (about twice a month) we dismiss our pre-schoolers to go downstairs and participate in their own "Liturgy of the Word." They learn the scripture of the Sunday (at an age-appropriate level) and, through song and crafts, come to a richer understanding of their religion. This is open to all children of the parish from age 3 - 8. |
Eucharistic Ministers |
This group of men and women distribute Communion at Sunday and weekday Masses. They also bring Communion to the sick and homebound of our parish family as well as to patients in the nearby hospitals of Long Island Jewish and Winthrop University Hospital. Click here for more information concerning our Pastoral Care for the Sick program. |
Family Mass Committee |
On the Third Sunday of the month, between September and June, our parish celebrates a special family liturgy. The Family Mass Committee helps to plan this liturgy by creating an atmosphere where children can experience a sense of participation. Liturgical participation includes: proclamation of the readings, singing in the special children's choir, and acting as ministers of hospitality. |

Legion of Mary
|
The Holy Spirit Legion of Mary Praesidium meets every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in the Central Meeting Room of the Parish Center. Men and women of the Legion report on their activities from the week before, they pray the rosary, and they read from the Legion of Mary guide books. They plan their home and hospital visits for the following week. They also deliver the "Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady" to a different home each week. Members of the Legion lead the Rosary each Saturday at 9:00 a.m., following the 8:30 a.m. Mass. |
Liturgy Committee |
The Eucharistic liturgy is the source and summit of our Christian life. Planning good liturgical celebrations helps the community to become aware of the special significance of each of the liturgical seasons of the Church year. Our liturgy committee meets throughout the year to discuss and implement ways to make our Eucharistic celebrations prayerful and meaningful. |
Memorials |
Those who wish to remember a loved one are able to arrange for Masses which are either announced (that is, said at a specific time at Holy Spirit parish within the regular Mass schedule) or unannounced (that is, said privately by a priest within the parish or outside the parish). Each week the WINE & HOSTS used at Mass are memorialized as well as the candles on the altar. Monetary gifts for vestments and sacred objects used in the Liturgy and adorning Holy Spirit Church may also be donated in memory of loved ones. All these are arranged in person at the rectory office. |
Music Ministry |
There are three principal choirs at Holy Spirit parish. Our contemporary folk group sings at the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday evening. Our traditional mixed choir sings at special liturgies and at Christmas and Holy Week. Our children's choir sings at the Family Liturgy. For further information, contact the rectory. |
Parish Social Ministry |
Parish Social Ministry lives out of Catholic Social Teaching. It recognizes the dignity of human persons, responds to their needs, whatever they may be, whether hunger, housing, illness, loneliness, abuse, aging, bereavement, legal or advocacy. These needs may affect only one person or one family or they may arise from social policy that affects many. The response may range from direct service to group action for justice. Click here for more information regarding our Parish Social Ministry |
Prayer Group |
Meeting every Wednesday in the Church at 7:30 p.m., members of the Holy Spirit Prayer Group gather for at least one hour to focus on the Lord, praising Him in song, sharing scripture, and thanking God for all His graces. |
Pre-cana Program |
As a means of preparing engaged couples to live out the Sacrament of Marriage, married couples within the parish lead groups of four engaged couples in a discussion about various issues related to marriage such as communication, decision making, spirituality of marriage, and relationships. The opening session takes place in the Parish Center and the next three meetings are in the homes of the two host couples responsible for each group of engaged couples. The program concludes with a closing Sunday Mass at 11:00 a.m. followed by breakfast for the couples and their immediate families. |
Religious Education Program
|
This program provides the opportunity for children in first through eighth grade to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic Faith and grow in their relationship with God. Classes are held weekly either in the facilities of Holy Spirit school. Each level offers an age-appropriate curriculum which follows the Religion curriculum for the Diocese. An Inclusive Special Needs Program is offered for children who are developmentally or physically challenged. Sacramental Preparation for Level 2 and 7 draws parents, the primary teachers of their children, into the process. Preparation for Confirmation, Eucharist and Reconciliation brings the children to a deeper understanding of their faith and the life of the Church. Catechists have the opportunity to go for support and training. Click here for more information regarding our parish Religious Education Program |
Renew 2000 |
RENEW 2000 is a way our whole diocese is getting ready for the year 2000. Parishioners gather in small discussion groups in homes for a weekly meeting for a period of six weeks. Between now and the end of the year 2000, there will be two six-week sessions which take place in the course of a single year. Click here to find out more about RENEW 2000. |
Respect Life Committee |
Our parish Respect Life Committee tries to heighten the awareness of parishioners concerning pro-life issues. The committee helps to sponsor annual diocesan poster and essay contests for young people; they organize the annual Right-to-Life march on Washington D.C. each January, and they host the Spiritual Adoption program whereby members of the parish take on the responsibility to pray for expecting parents that they may choose life for their child. |
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA |
A team of parishioners works with a group of adults who are desirous of being baptized or welcomed into the Catholic Church. Each grade level learns stories from the bible and songs. A graduation-recital program completes this fun and informative experience. |
